Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what is different for brands

AI Overviews are the short AI summaries that appear above the normal results for some Google searches. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience where the whole page is an AI answer and people can ask follow-up questions. For a brand, the difference matters: they can name different products for the same question, so being present in one tells you little about the other. Measure them separately.

What AI Overviews are

An AI Overview is a block at the top of a regular Google results page. Google decides per search whether to show one. When it does, it writes a short answer from pages it considers relevant and links to some of them. The ten blue links are still there underneath.

For buyer searches such as "project management tool for a small team", an overview often lists a few products by name. People who read the overview may never scroll to the results below it, so the brands named in that block get attention first.

What AI Mode is

AI Mode is a separate mode of Google Search. Instead of a results page with a summary on top, the answer is the page. It is longer, it is conversational, and the person can ask a follow-up ("which of these has a free plan?") without starting again.

Google has described AI Mode as breaking a question into several related searches and combining what it finds, a technique often called query fan-out. In practice that means AI Mode can draw on a wider set of pages than a single overview, and its answers tend to compare more options in more detail.

Why the two can name different brands

Because they are built differently, the same question can produce different lists. An overview answers one search in a few sentences; AI Mode runs several searches and writes a longer comparison. A product that appears on many comparison pages may show up in both. A product that is strong in one niche may appear only in the longer AI Mode answer, where there is room for it.

Both also change over time. The pages Google reads change, and the answer for the same question can differ from one day to the next. That is why a single screenshot is weak evidence either way.

How to measure both

Treat them as two separate channels and measure each one with the same questions:

What tends to help in both

Both surfaces build their answers from pages on the web, so the same groundwork helps: a clear statement on your own site of what you are and who you are for, accurate listings on the comparison and review pages that rank for your category, and specific pages for the use cases buyers ask about. None of this guarantees a mention. It makes you easier to find and easier to describe.

Shortlist measures Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode as separate engines on every leaderboard, next to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, so you can see where you are named and where you are missing.

Questions

Is AI Mode replacing AI Overviews?

No. They exist side by side: AI Overviews appear on some regular search results pages, and AI Mode is a separate mode people choose. A brand should check both.

Can I opt in to AI Overviews or AI Mode?

There is no sign-up. Both draw on pages Google can crawl and index. Pages that are blocked from Google cannot be used as sources.

Does ranking first on Google mean I appear in the AI answer?

Not necessarily. The AI answer is written from several pages and may name brands that do not rank first, or leave out ones that do. That is why it needs its own measurement.
