ChatGPT visibility: is your brand in the answer?
ChatGPT visibility is the share of relevant buyer questions where ChatGPT names your brand in its answer. It is not a rank on a results page: there is one answer, it usually names a handful of options, and a brand is either in it or not. The only reliable way to know is to ask the questions buyers ask, many times, and count.
Why ChatGPT visibility matters now
Many buyers start with a question to an assistant instead of a search box: "which tool should a small team use for…", "what is a good alternative to…". When the assistant answers with a short list, the brands on that list get considered and the rest often never get a visit. That makes being named a top-of-funnel event that does not show up in your web analytics.
ChatGPT can answer from what it learned in training and, when search is on, from pages it reads at the moment of the question. Both paths matter. A brand that is widely and consistently described on the web tends to show up in both.
How to measure it properly
One screenshot of one answer proves very little. ChatGPT answers vary from one ask to the next, between phrasings, and over time. A useful measurement has four parts:
- A fixed set of real buyer questions for your category, from broad to specific.
- Several repeats of each question, so you see how consistently a brand appears, not one lucky answer.
- A count of which brands each answer names, and in what order.
- An error bar. If you were named in 6 of 50 answers, the honest statement is a range, not "12%". Shortlist uses a 95% Wilson interval for this.
What tends to move ChatGPT visibility
There is no switch to flip and no ad slot to buy inside the answer. Assistants that search the web lean on sources that describe a category clearly: comparison articles, review sites, documentation, community threads and the brands' own pages when they state plainly what the product is and who it is for.
Practical steps that follow from that: say in plain words on your site what category you are in and for whom; make pricing and key facts easy to find; be present, accurately, on the third-party pages that assistants cite for your category; and keep names consistent so a model can connect mentions of you across the web. Then measure again, because the only proof is the next set of answers.
ChatGPT is one engine of six
Buyers also use Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. They do not agree with each other. A brand can be named often by one engine and rarely by another, which is why every Shortlist leaderboard has a per-engine grid. Start with the free check for a quick read, or look at a category leaderboard to see the full picture for your market.
A simple way to track it over time
Pick the ten questions that matter most for your category and keep them fixed. Changing the questions every month makes trends impossible to read. Record the date of every measurement, because ChatGPT and the pages it reads both change, and a number without a date cannot be compared with anything. If you work with an agency or a consultant, ask to see the raw answers behind any visibility figure they report; a percentage on its own is not evidence.

Questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not inside the organic answer. Visibility comes from how the model and the pages it reads describe your category. Shortlist only records what the answers say.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?
Answers are generated, not looked up, and with search on the pages read can differ each time. That is why we ask each question several times and report a rate with an interval.
How quickly can visibility change?
Answers that use live search can change as soon as the pages they read change. What the model learned in training changes only with new model versions. Weekly measurement shows both.
Is a high mention rate the same as being recommended as the top choice?
No. Being named means being on the shortlist. Shortlist also reports average position, but it does not judge which product is better.
