Cursor vs Claude Code: what AI assistants recommend

When buyers ask AI assistants which AI coding assistant to use, Cursor is named far more often than Claude Code: in 103 of 148 answers (70%) against 65 (44%), collected on 29 October 2026 from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overview. The gap is not even across questions. Claude Code is named almost as often as Cursor when the question is about professional developers, teams or a large codebase, and almost never when it is about a free plan, a student or a beginner. Some answers do not pick one at all: they recommend Cursor in the editor plus Claude Code in the terminal.

The short answer, in numbers

We asked 10 buyer questions about AI coding assistants, 3 times each, on five AI engines, and stored every answer. These are the headline numbers for the two products. The interval is a 95% Wilson interval: with 148 answers, a difference smaller than about ten points could be noise.

By AI engine: ChatGPT has the widest gap

Every engine named Cursor more often, but by very different margins. ChatGPT named Cursor in 27 of 30 answers and Claude Code in only 9. Perplexity was the closest: 23 against 18. Claude, which is made by the same company as Claude Code, named Cursor in all 30 of its answers and Claude Code in 21. Google AI Mode sat in between, at 23 against 17.

Google AI Overview did not show an overview for any of these 10 questions in our run, so neither product was named there. That is a result too: for these searches, the AI layer on a normal Google results page was absent.

By question: where Claude Code disappears

The question decides most of the gap. On questions about professional work, the two are close: for the question about a large TypeScript codebase, 12 of 12 answers named Cursor and 11 named Claude Code. On the three questions about price, students and beginners, Claude Code was named once in 36 answers. Cursor was named in 28 of them.

Neither product did well on the question about working inside VS Code and JetBrains IDEs: Cursor was named in 4 of 12 answers and Claude Code in 2. Those answers mostly pointed to GitHub Copilot and JetBrains AI Assistant, which plug into an existing editor instead of replacing it.

How the assistants describe each one

Across the answers, the descriptions were consistent. Cursor is described as an AI-first code editor built on VS Code, with codebase indexing and an agent that edits several files at once. Claude Code is described as a terminal-based agent for large codebases, multi-file refactors and harder debugging, usually for experienced engineers. A few excerpts, quoted as the assistants wrote them:

Cursor is a VS Code fork with deep codebase indexing, a multi-file agent, and a Tab engine that predicts your next edit.

Claude, answering about professional developers

Claude Code – Anthropic’s terminal-based agent that handles deep reasoning, complex debugging, and large-scale architectural refactors directly from the command line.

Google AI Mode

Cursor is better once you can review code, since its multi-file agent generates large changes quickly, which can outpace a new developer's ability to verify them.

Claude, answering about beginners

Some answers recommend both

In at least 15 of the 148 answers (we read each candidate), the assistant suggested adding Claude Code to an editor tool rather than choosing between them: Cursor or GitHub Copilot for daily work, Claude Code in the terminal for large refactors and migrations. Claude said this in 9 answers, Perplexity in 5 and Google AI Mode in 1. ChatGPT never did.

A sensible default is Cursor for everyday work plus Claude Code for complex terminal-based tasks; many teams use this two-tool pattern instead of expecting one assistant to excel at every workflow.

Perplexity

If you want a single answer, start with Cursor (or Copilot if you don't want to change editors), and add Claude Code once you hit tasks that need deeper reasoning across a big codebase.

Claude

What this means if you are choosing

This is a record of what AI assistants say, not a product test. Read it as a map of how each tool is positioned. If you want one AI-first editor for daily work, the assistants point to Cursor. If your work is long, multi-file changes in a large repository and you are comfortable in a terminal, they point to Claude Code, often as a second tool. If you need a free plan or you are learning, the assistants leave Claude Code out almost entirely.

If you build a developer tool, the same data shows where the openings are: the VS Code and JetBrains question had no dominant answer from either product, and Google AI Overview showed nothing at all. The full ranking of 20+ tools, with every engine and every stored answer, is on the AI coding assistant leaderboard.
