Wix vs Squarespace: what AI assistants recommend

AI assistants name both Wix and Squarespace for most website builder questions, but Wix more often and usually first. On 29 October 2026, across 150 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overview, Wix was named in 121 (81%) and Squarespace in 104 (69%). When both appeared, Wix came first in 87 of 102 answers. The clearest split is the free plan question: Wix was named in 12 of 12 answers, Squarespace in 1. The assistants position Wix as the easy all-rounder and Squarespace as the design-led choice for service businesses and portfolios.

The short answer, in numbers

We asked 10 buyer questions about website builders, 3 times each, on five AI engines, and stored every answer. With 150 answers, the 95% intervals below overlap only slightly, so the gap between the two is real but not large.

By AI engine: close everywhere

Unlike many categories, the engines broadly agree here. ChatGPT named Wix in 30 of 30 answers and Squarespace in 24. Claude: 30 and 25. Perplexity: 29 and 26. Google AI Mode: 29 and 26. Google AI Overview showed an overview for only 3 of its 30 searches, and those 3 named both.

By question: the free plan decides the gap

On six of the ten questions, both builders were named in every answer or all but one. The difference comes from three questions. On the free plan question, Squarespace was named once in 12 answers, because the assistants were looking for a builder with a free tier. On the SEO question, Wix was named in 12 and Squarespace in 9. On the freelancer portfolio question, 11 against 9.

How the assistants describe each one

The descriptions were remarkably stable across engines. Wix is the easy, all-round default with an AI site generator and a free plan that carries Wix branding. Squarespace is the polished, design-forward option, most often suggested for service businesses, bookings, photographers and portfolios. A few excerpts, quoted as the assistants wrote them:

Squarespace for service businesses, Shopify for products, Webflow for search-led growth, Wix for speed.

Claude

Bottom line: choose Wix for the easiest general migration, Squarespace for a polished low-maintenance site, Webflow for design control, and Shopify for commerce.

Perplexity

If you care more about a polished, professional look and don’t mind a slightly more design-focused setup, Squarespace is a good option for service businesses and scheduling.

ChatGPT

Its free plan includes a capable drag-and-drop editor, AI-assisted site creation, hundreds of templates, hosting, and basic SEO tools—but your site uses a Wix subdomain and displays Wix branding.

Who else gets named

Wix and Squarespace are the top two on the website builder leaderboard, but they are rarely the only names. Shopify was named in 51% of answers, mostly when selling online came up, and WordPress.com in 49%. Hostinger Website Builder, Webflow and GoDaddy Website Builder each appeared in a third or more of the answers.

What this means if you are choosing

This is a record of what AI assistants say, not a product test. If you want the most widely recommended general builder, or you need a free plan to start, the assistants point to Wix. If the look of the site matters most and you run a service business or a portfolio, they point to Squarespace, usually as the first alternative to Wix. If selling products is the core of the business, they move to Shopify.

If you run a website builder, the gap to close is visible: the free plan, SEO and portfolio questions are where the assistants choose between these two. The full ranking, every engine and every stored answer are on the website builder leaderboard.
