The short answer, in numbers
We asked 10 buyer questions about accounting software for small businesses, 3 times each, on five AI engines, and stored every answer. The 95% intervals overlap, so overall the two are close. Zoho Books was named almost exactly as often as Wave (103 answers), so this is a three-way race at the top, with Xero and FreshBooks just behind (94 each).

How the assistants describe each one
The assistants describe QuickBooks Online as the default: the most common choice, the one accountants know, and the one that grows furthest with the business. They describe Wave as the way to keep costs near zero, with free invoicing and bookkeeping, suited to freelancers and very small businesses that may need to switch as they grow. A few excerpts, quoted as the assistants wrote them:
QuickBooks scales the furthest without requiring a migration to enterprise software, while Wave and FreshBooks work well at smaller scales but may require a switch as complexity grows.
For a 5-person business, QuickBooks Online is the safest default, with Xero as the main alternative.
Wave offers double-entry accounting, invoicing, and reporting at no cost, and you pay only for payments and payroll.
Recommendation: Start with Wave if keeping costs near zero matters most.
If you expect to work with a CPA, QuickBooks is often the easiest platform to share financial records on.
What this means if you are choosing
This is a record of what AI assistants say, not a product test, and features and prices change, so check them on each vendor's site. As a map of positioning: if you are a freelancer or a very small business and want to pay as little as possible, the assistants point to Wave. If you have staff, sell online, need bank and payment connections, or work with an accountant, they point to QuickBooks. Zoho Books is the name that most often comes up as the middle ground.
If you sell accounting software, the gap is visible in one question: bank and Stripe connections. The full ranking, with every engine and every stored answer, is on the small business accounting leaderboard.
